What is Nostr?

Nostr (Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays) is a decentralized, open protocol for creating censorship-resistant, distributed social applications. It allows users to communicate through simple, cryptographically secure messages (or “notes”) that can be relayed through a network of independent servers. Unlike traditional social media platforms, Nostr eliminates central authority control, empowering individuals to share content freely while maintaining full control over their own data.

The core of Nostr is its simplicity: it uses public-key cryptography to enable user identification and message integrity, while relying on relay servers to broadcast messages to other users. Nostr can be used for a variety of applications, including social networking, messaging, and content distribution, with its decentralized nature providing resilience against censorship and shutdowns.
